What I Pack for IFA Berlin.

In the spirit of prepping for IFA, our COO Rich Coombes posts about the struggle to decide what to pack for gruelling days walking the trade show floor:

Lessons learned at trade shows and Berlin’s brilliant IFA.

If you have been going as long as I have, no doubt you will have picked up a trick or two, and learned some harsh lessons along the way. Mine largely revolve around my love of gadgets and camera equipment, and complaints from my aging back.

What have I learned? Largely to stop carrying so much equipment. By the end of the day I frequently have felt that I’ve just completed a gruelling Himalayan trek. Do I want to take a z9 and get some cool shots, yes, but my back does not.

What I used to take to trade shows (not pictured – the days of backache that followed)

One key learning is this:
Remember why you are going!

I want to get around as many stalls as I can of course, learning from brands about any troubles they may have and thinking about cool new solutions to make their lives easier. I LOVE doing that. I don’t mind talking to them about Digishare and how it might help, but I really love is figuring out how to help people (even if means sending them in a different direction, or telling them we cannot help right now).

I can only do that if I do not feel like I have been used as a pack horse for preceding days or hours. Travelling light on the days I’m there keeps my energy levels up, and makes me a better listener.

What i pack after many years of learning painful mistakes

What you can see in my images is progress I’ve made over time, and my back thanks for me for it! This year I’ll have a laptop, dji pocket, battery backup, and charger and that’s about it. Except of course for the obligatory spare pair of reading glasses.
